Root Canal Therapy

When infection reaches the inner portion of a tooth, it cannot heal on its own. Without treatment, the infection can continue spreading, causing more discomfort and extensive dental problems.

Root canal therapy allows us to address the source of the problem while preserving the tooth whenever possible.

What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a procedure that eliminates infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth. After carefully accessing the inner chamber, we remove the damaged pulp and clean and disinfect the canals. The space is then filled and sealed to help prevent future infection.

In many cases, we also place a dental crown over the tooth to restore strength and provide extra protection.

When Is Root Canal Therapy Necessary?

Root canal therapy may be recommended when infection or inflammation affects the pulp inside a tooth.

Common signs include:

  • Persistent tooth pain
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Pain when chewing or biting
  • Swelling around the gums
  • A cracked or injured tooth
  • Deep decay that has reached the pulp
  • Darkening or discoloration of a tooth

A comprehensive examination and digital imaging help determine whether root canal treatment is the most appropriate solution.

How Should I Care for My Tooth After Root Canal Therapy?

Following treatment, it's normal to experience mild tenderness for a few days as the surrounding tissues heal.

To support recovery:

  • Follow all post-treatment instructions
  • Take medications as directed
  • Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth initially
  • Continue brushing and flossing normally
  • Attend any recommended follow-up appointments
  • Schedule placement of a crown if one is recommended
